Under Construction

Here's an update of the construction this week.

Day 2 - The framing of the walls and floor went up quickly.  This was a nice surprise after Monday's demo.  Gahh I'm so excited! :)

Day 2 - Framing

Day 3 - More framing of the walls and the master ceiling/roof.  It's starting to look like a room already!  We're surprised how quickly it's all coming together.  We're now able to walk out to the room and get a feel for the layout and size.

Day 3 - Interior View of Bedroom area

There was a little bit of miscommunication regarding the location of the side windows.  Since the side wall of the garage has a window centered, we wanted to strategically place the new windows.  I love symmetry so wanted to locate two new windows on the second level spaced evenly apart with the garage window falling in the middle below.  This created an issue with the interior layout since the closet is located in the rear corner of the room.  (It was recommended to put the bathroom adjacent to the existing house for ease of extending the plumbing system.)  So instead of losing valuable closet space, we decided on a double window in the bedroom area.  We wanted the window to be centered along the entire length of the house so that it would be directly above the garage window but it was installed centered along the bedroom wall.  Note to self:  Thoroughly review revised plans to make sure the design intent was communicated properly.  I should know better and be good at this because of my job.  Anyways, we now have a few options:
  1. Leave the opening in the current location.  (I could live with this.  Nick disagrees.)
  2. Shift the window to be centered along the length of the house.  This is ideal, however, based on the location of the interior closet wall, the window will be shy of the center by about 6 inches.  I bet we wouldn't notice if we weren't math geeks.  But realistically, I don't think it will be noticeable to our eyes.  The shift will also make the window further from the end of the bed, hopefully meaning reduced sunshine in my eyes in the morning ha!
  3. Change layout to two single windows with one in the closet.  This option would be for exterior aesthetic reasons only.  The window would be blocked by clothes.  This seems silly to me but the hubs thinks its a viable option.  I thought we already went through this option and tossed it in the trash.  : P  I guess the difference is, we now know that the centered option won't line up perfectly.
We're meeting with the contractor this weekend to discuss.  Here's a picture of the current layout.  The picture makes me laugh bc Nick looks so small.  His arms are placed in the location of the garage window.

Day 3 - Side View

Day 4 - Roofing installed.  This isn't the best picture but the new roof is different from the existing roof shingles.  The new shingles are the new architectural style shingles on the market.  Since we'll likely be due for reroofing the existing roof in the next 5 years or so, we decided to go with this style which we'll match later.

Day 4 - Roof Installed

Day 5 - Somewhat of  a rainy day so only minor work done.  Garage window openings cut out and master window openings sealed.  Note that the window on the rear wall is the bathroom, the corner is the walk-in closet, and the bedroom area is in the front.  The windows look fine, right?

In the next image, the bathroom is on the left, walk-in closet on the right.

Day 5 - Interior View

Tomorrow, we're off to select our plumbing fixtures.  I know, I know, thrilling.  But lots of decisions make me cringe.  We're probably the two most indecisive people I know, at least when it comes to minor things that we don't care that much about (i.e. a toilet).  Shouldn't that make it easier?!

  1. Framing makes a world of difference! Can't believe that part happens so fast!
Also- damn engineering/typeA mindset...but that window would drive me nuts too.
