The Accidental Project - Back Stairs

After getting a quote for a new exterior deck (Summer 2010), we decided against the full deck to simply upgrade the wood treads of our existing back stairway with Trex material.  Upon ripping up the stair treads, Nick found the stringers were rotted and decided to demo the entire stairway.  So Nick and his friends spent the summer rebuilding the stairs.  It was not the ideal time of year to demo the stairway leading to our backyard, patio, and pool and any plans of summer cookouts had to be put on hold as our patio soon became a construction zone.

The project also included installing new vinyl siding to enclose underneath the stairway for a small storage area and adding a new top landing which is an improvement from the existing where the stairway started right at the door.  I'm glad the guys proved to be handy although I have my gripes about a few aspects of the final product (i.e. slightly uneven stair treads and large concrete block at the bottom which is not uniform with the rest of the stairs riser height).  The new material  is said to be low maintenance and stain resistant, however we've already noticed some staining from weather elements (I guess?).  Although the material is backed by a 25-yr warranty, the manufacturers website states that the warranty does not cover conditions caused by weathering.  Figures!  Perhaps we should try cleaning with soapy water as the website suggests.  I haven't been able to dig up a 'Before' picture (home improvement rookie mistake!) but I'll continue the search - imagine a typical white wood stairway.  For now, a few pictures of the construction and final product (Note the water in the finished images is from recent rain and not a stain.).  Thanks Nick & Co.!
